Fair by agreement

Splits and agreements

Shared costs are split the way you both agreed. A change to the split applies only once the other person says yes.

Five ways to split a cost

Every shared cost follows an agreement. Choose the method that fits your home, and give one bill a different split when it needs one.

  • Equal: everyone carries the same share.
  • Income-weighted: shares follow what each person earns.
  • Custom percentages: for example 60 and 40.
  • A fixed amount for one person, and the remainder for the rest.
  • Personal: the whole cost belongs to one person.

Rounded the same way every time

Shares always add up to the whole. When a cost does not divide evenly, the largest remainder rule decides who carries the extra cent, with a stable tie-break, and the result is stored. R100 shared three ways is R33.34, R33.33 and R33.33.

  • A stored figure never shifts later.
  • If an income is missing or zero, Homora asks you to choose an equal or custom split instead of dividing by zero.

A change needs a yes

A new split is a proposal. It starts from a future date, and until the other person accepts it, the previous agreement keeps applying.

  • A new cost with no accepted agreement shows as Unallocated · awaiting approval and is not counted in anyone’s share.
  • The other person can accept, reject, or counter-propose with different values.
  • Every change keeps an audit trail: who, when, and the old value to the new.
  • If two of you edit at the same moment, the later save does not overwrite the earlier one. Homora shows what changed and who changed it, and lets you review and try again.

Your income stays yours

Choose how much of your income others can see: private, a shared total, the detail, or an agreed ratio only. Unknown income stays unknown; it is never treated as zero.

  • Homora warns you before an income-weighted split could reveal a private salary by inference.
  • The shared dashboard never shows private income totals or personal disposable amounts.

Your own categories

Add categories such as Baby, Braai or Varsity, personal or for the household. Each one belongs to a built-in group, so summaries can still roll up.

  • Up to 50 active custom categories for you, and 50 for the household.
  • Personal categories are never visible to anyone else, even in a shared household.
  • Archive instead of delete: records keep the name, and history still shows it.
Premium

An equal split is free for everyone; percentages, fixed amounts, income-weighted and fixed-plus-remainder splits, and splits on single items and goals, are Premium.

Questions people ask

Can my partner change the split without me?

No. A change to the split is a proposal, and it applies only from a future date once every affected member has accepted it. Until then the previous agreement keeps applying.

What happens when a cost does not divide evenly?

Homora uses the largest remainder rule with a stable tie-break, so the shares always add up to the whole and the same cost is always split the same way. The result is stored with the record.

Do I have to share my income to use an income-weighted split?

No. You choose whether your income is private, a shared total, shared in detail, or used as an agreed ratio only. Before a split could give away a private income by inference, Homora warns you.

Are custom categories a Premium feature?

No. Custom categories are about control, so they are free on every plan.
