Goals and emergency fund

A free emergency fund for you and another for your household, plus goals and savings boxes you can build alone or together. Homora records where the money is kept; it never holds it.

An emergency fund that is always free

You get one personal emergency fund and one for your household, on every plan, and they are never locked. Call it an Emergency fund, a Rainy day fund, or anything you like; it is the same fund either way.

  • Set the target as a number of months of costs (1 to 24, three by default), or as a fixed amount.
  • For months of costs, yearly bills count as one twelfth of their amount a month. One-off bills do not count.
  • When the fund falls below its target after a withdrawal, Homora offers a refill.

Goals and savings boxes

A goal is something you save towards, with a target. A savings box is an ongoing reserve you top up and draw from, and its target is optional.

  • A goal finishes as reached, then bought or archived.
  • A box never finishes: at its target it is funded, and it stays open.
  • Homora shows how many months a goal needs at your monthly amount. No growth is assumed.
  • Keep it personal or share it with your household, and split it differently from your bills if you like.

Withdrawals come with a reason

Taking money out of a box records an amount, a date and a reason, such as “Car repair”. The balance is contributions minus withdrawals, and it never goes below zero.

  • Any member can withdraw from a household box without approval, because emergencies cannot wait. Everyone else is told straight away.
  • A withdrawal can be reversed but never deleted.
  • A bill or purchase can record a savings box as where it was paid from.

Everyone’s stake is clear

A member’s stake is what they contributed, minus what has been taken from their stake. Shared use comes off the stakes in proportion, and settlement credits each member for their part.

  • Example: stakes of 70 and 30, and a shared cost of R2,000 split 60 and 40. Sipho’s stake pays R1,400 against his R1,200 share, Thandi’s pays R600 against her R800 share, so Thandi owes Sipho R200.
  • Personal use comes only off your own stake.

If someone leaves

The person who leaves takes what they put in, for partners and housemates alike, even when a goal was not reached. The other members’ stakes stay untouched.

  • Their stake becomes a personal goal or box of the same name, marked as moved from the household.
  • An emergency fund joins their own, or becomes it.
  • Nothing moves money. Homora records who holds what, and you transfer it yourselves.
Premium

Emergency funds are always free, and each person keeps one other goal or savings box on Free; Premium removes that limit and allows custom splits on goals.

Questions people ask

Is the emergency fund really free?

Yes. You get one personal fund and one for your household on every plan. They are never locked, even if a Premium plan lapses.

Can I call it something else?

Yes. Choose Emergency fund, Rainy day fund, or your own words. It is the same fund whatever you call it, and Homora uses your name for it everywhere.

Does Homora move money into my savings?

No. A box can note where the money is kept, such as “Joint savings account”, but Homora only records. You move the money yourself.

What happens to our shared savings if one of us leaves?

The person leaving takes what they put in, as a personal goal or box of the same name. The stake of the person staying remains in the household box.
